Google measures real-world experience through three metrics, and they break ranking ties between otherwise equal pages. Here they are in plain language.

LCP: how fast the main content shows

Largest Contentful Paint measures when the biggest visible element finishes loading. Aim for under 2.5 seconds. Oversized images and slow servers are the usual culprits.

INP: how fast the page responds

Interaction to Next Paint measures the delay between a tap and a visible response. Heavy JavaScript is the common cause; trimming and deferring it usually fixes this.

CLS: how much the layout jumps

Cumulative Layout Shift measures unexpected movement as the page loads. Reserve space for images and ads so nothing leaps around under the reader's thumb.

The takeaway

You do not need to memorize the acronyms. You need a fast server, right-sized images, lean scripts, and reserved space. Get those, and the scores follow.
